Creating music used to be an expensive business.
Studio time, session musicians, sound engineers and many more people were involved which meant large budgets were mandatory. Budgets might have ranged from $10,000 (eg: indie albums) to multiple millions (film scores) depending on the size and purpose of the production.
But as usual technology has disrupted this.
The technology has become way more affordable, and with the advent of the internet and the competition it has created, some of the best sound designers in the world have made an amazing array of sounds available for people like you and I to use … for FREE….
I am going to show you where to find my favourites in a moment but first let’s consider WHY it is so important to have access to great sounds….
When we create music in our studios we are like cooks in a kitchen. And every good cook will tell you that quality ingredients are at the heart of every delicious dish: The higher quality the ingredients, the better the meal… simple as that!
And it is the same when it comes to making music… the better the sounds you have to work with, the higher quality your output has a chance of being.
Another thing to consider is that, if you’re anything like me, good sounds are what really inspire you throughout the initial compositional process and help you come up with ideas.
So you are probably wondering where to get these quality sounds for FREE?!
Here are a few of my favourite spots online to help you get started.
Spitfire Audio LABS series
PianoBook
Ableton
Freesound
Enjoy!
And here is my Twitter thread for those of you who like that kind of thing ??
